Description

This unit provides an introduction to quality improvement methods, concentrating on the central principle of understanding variation, the use of exploratory data analysis and the proper display of results. Other aspects include special cause and common cause variation, effects of control strategies in a random environment, and critical analysis of statistical presentations.

Topics are selected from total quality control and process improvement, control charts for variables and attributes, including some background statistical theory, process capability and reliability analysis. Experience is provided in the use of computer packages.

Assessment

This comprises an end-of-semester examination and in-semester tests or assignments. All assessment tasks require students to apply their knowledge of the unit content to solve previously unseen problems. Credit is given for clarity and correctness of presentation as well as for actual results.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course.
