The Academy is an enrichment programme in Mathematics organised by the School of Mathematics and Statistics of The University of Western Australia for high school students who are currently in Years 10 and 11. Advanced Year 9 students, for example those who have completed the Noether or Polya Enrichment Series of the Mathematics Challenge, are also encouraged to participate.
The programme of the Academy is suitable for a broad range of mathematically able students. The aim is to broaden and deepen their mathematical knowledge, to involve them in problem solving and to extend the range of their mathematical skills.
The Academy runs on a regular basis during the school terms. All sessions are held on Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:45.
In 2012 the sessions will be held on
The lectures are held in Mathematics Lecture Room 1 (adjacent to the Weatherburn Lecture Theatre) of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UWA. Enrolment commences at 10:00 am prior to the session. Parking should be available on Fairway Drive.
Each session comprises of a short lecture and a workshop during which students work in groups on selected problems. Problem sheets are distributed at the end of the session, and students are expected to complete a number of problems for homework before the next session. Prizes are awarded for meritorious solutions to selected problems.
All the material presented at the Academy is distributed in the form of printed notes. However you will be expected to work on problems so you'll need a pen and notebook or paper. A calculator is not required, but not forbidden either.
The topics to be covered in 2012 will be different from those in 2011.
The Academy commenced in 1995, enrolling about 60 students from 25 schools in the metropolitan area, ranging from inner city to outer suburban schools and including schools from the State, Catholic and Independent Systems.
The Academy has continued successfully in each year since then.
You can enrol electronically here. The fee for the whole year, including printed material, is $50. Students must also provide their own stationery. The fee can be paid at the School of Mathematics Statistics (in cash or by cheque payable to the University of Western Australia) preferably before the first session.
