Other prizes and awards

Though not related to the WAJO, a couple of prizes and awards are awarded at the WAJO closing presentation ceremony:

UWA, with the Australian Mathematical Olympiads Committee, is hosting the 2009 WA Junior Mathematics Olympiad for all bright Year 9 and exceptional Year 8 students.

The Olympiad is a WA high school competition with teams of four students (Year 9 or below) representing their schools.

The aim of the competition is to identify the most gifted students in Mathematics.

2009 competition details

  • Saturday, 31 October, 2009 from 8 am to 1.20 pm, Ross Lecture Theatre
  • Bring pens, pencils, ruler and compass but no calculators - brains only.
  • Team nominations, the names of accompanying teachers and the registration fee are due before Friday, 16 October, 2009.

Students' solutions will be marked and prizes awarded at a ceremony on the same day.

Students are requested to arrive at 8 am but not later than 8.15 am. You should bring lunch if required. Vending machines are available for drinks.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the winning teams and the best individual entries. The best performing students will be invited to attend some of the 2010 Mathematics Olympiad Problem-Solving Programmes.

The competition is targeted at the Year 9 Level, and is open to Year 9 (and younger) Students. There are Year 9 and Year 8 Prizes awarded.

There's a Statement by a Supplier in the name of the WA Mathematical Olympiads Committee should you need it when organising payment for your registrations:

It would be appreciated, though not obligatory, if teams could be accompanied by a responsible team leader who will assist with the supervision and marking.

How to enter

Please contact us, telephone (+61 8) 6488 3340, if your school intends to enter a team.

If you have one or two students at your school whom you would like to participate, but not enough for a full team, please let us know and we will form teams of 'allies'.

Please send a cheque of $8 per student with your nomination and names of accompanying teachers by Friday 16 October 2009. The cheque should be made out to the WA Mathematical Olympiads Committee and should be sent to:

Participants email list

We have set up a WAJO participants email list. This email list is moderated to prevent spamming. It is used to notify Heads of School Mathematics Departments or others interested in or involved in the organising of school teams for the Olympiad.

Email to this list will be limited to the couple of months before the Olympiad.
